Featured Guests: A Romantic Escape from Kansas City

We skipped out on Pride weekend in Kansas City to escape to the Ozark Highlands Getaway Cabins for a weekend retreat. Escaping the hustle and bustle of the city and our own lives, we embraced the serenity and tranquility of nature in the minimalistic getaway cabins by reading books, listening to the sound of nature, and enjoying the campfire outside when it wasn’t raining. It was also our 3.5 year anniversary, so we celebrated in the most special way we know how by cooking one of our favorite meals together with our two dogs and two of our best friends.

My Fiance, Haley, and I escaped to the Getaway Cabins in the Ozark Highlands to get away from our busy lives and the city. It was pride weekend, and although we were sad not attending the festivities back in the city, we really needed an escape for the weekend together! It was our anniversary weekend and we thought it would be a great way to celebrate by adventuring to the Getaway Cabins we’ve always wanted to visit, in a place we’ve never been before. Quality time together for us is best spent with a hot coffee, a couple books, our two pups and being in nature. This was the best case scenario for us and it was just the reset we both needed for not only ourselves personally, but for our relationship as well. There’s something about being out in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, where you can talk with your partner about your hopes, dreams and aspirations together.

We met back in 2019 at Pride in San Diego, her hometown. We were both dating other people at the time and over time life just brought us together. We knew we were meant to be together and time apart really gave us the distance we needed to know and understand that. We spent what felt like every other weekend traveling to each other. I was living in Seattle at the time and she was in San Diego. Whenever we were together, we always spent our time outside in nature either hiking, at the beach, or spending time with family in the backyard, so the Getaway Cabins were right up our alley!

We absolutely loved the outpost we escaped to. It was quiet and tranquile, but was close enough to the lakes nearby so we could take our paddle boards out with our two friends who joined us for the weekend. The cabin was quaint and homey, which is exactly what you want when you’re out in the woods. It makes you want to cuddle up with a coffee, a book, a fire and your loved one. The amenities and add-ons available to us while there were great, because it ensured us we had everything we needed within arms reach to make sure our weekend was comfortable and stress free. This was our first Outpost we’ve been to, but you can bet we will definitely be visiting other Outposts next time we travel!

My favorite moments of the experience were sitting by the fire with friends and chatting about our life goals and dreams. I loved coming in to the cabin when it started raining to find comfort by the big window with the rain pouring down outside. I had the most productive reading session with my coffee in hand, and raindrops trickling down the window. The peace and quietness of the woods outside was by far my most favorite part of the experience. I think I can speak for my Fiance when I say she loved cooking and sitting in the tiny kitchen we had just conversing about life.

With being connected to not just one, but TWO phones constantly for work, it was the best feeling to be able to disconnect and lock my phone in the phone box Getaway provides in our cabin. It’s really hard to get away from the city, the people, and the hustle of my job, but being able to unwind and unplug for two days was just the reset I needed to come back well rested and ready to go for the next week. Haley also works in sales, which means she’s connected to the phone line as much as I am. To be able to step in to nature and out of the city, meant we could relax, truly enjoy each others company without a bother in the world and give each other the quality time we both needed away from home. It also meant we could spend time outdoors with our dogs, who also hate how much we work. This I’m sure of!

Our free time was spent cooking, chillin’ by the bonfire eating s’mores with our two best friends, snuggling with the pups in the cabin, exploring the nature trails surrounding the cabin, playing card games in the cabin while listening to country music and watching the rain pour down outside. We were busy the entire time just relaxing and doing exactly what we had envisioned doing during our stay at the Outpost! It’s not very often that you don’t have access to the internet, cell service, or your tv, so we took advantage of the short opportunity we had to become kids again and enjoy our weekend. Again, our dogs absolutely loved that we weren’t consumed by work or our phones or laptops like we usually are at home. I wish I could just live out there!

If you are looking for peace and the quiet nothingness of nature, this is your place. It’s probably one of the most relaxing trips you’ll go on with how unplugged the cabin is. If you’re looking to spend more quality time with your loved one(s) without the distractions of the outside world, this is the place for you! I highly recommend anyone looking to get to know themselves better or their partners, family or friends to do it while taking a trip to one of the Outposts. You’ll get their undivided attention and quality time that you won’t otherwise get in the city, which I think is exactly what most of the people in this world need.
